EXTENSION DEVELOPMENT

Agricultural extension was once known as the application of scientific research and new knowledge to agricultural practices through farmer education. The field of extension now encompasses a wider range of communication and learning activities organised for rural people by professionals from different disciplines. In ethiopia extension programme mainly focuses on assisting small-scale farmers to improve their productivity through disseminating research-generated information and technologies. It has been widely accepted by a large number of farmers across the country. It is obvious that, as the number of participating farmers in the extension programme increases, the demand for agricultural inputs also increases at a considerable rate.

Below are documents and articles prepared by MoARD and other organizations on diffrent aspects of Ethiopian extension development.

Modified Participatory Development Training and Extension System (PADETES) Amharic document (MOA 1996EC):  In this document the history of Agricultural extension in ethiopia and its development is described. The PADETES system is also evaluated very well. (276kb,36pp)

Participatory Agricultural Extension System (Amharic) (MoARD,1999EC); This document gives elaborated information of the agriucltural extension goals and objectives, directives and methods to the delivery system, the benificiaries and organizations and institutions invlolved in the whole process (311kb,33pp)

Farmers Training Center working manual (Amharic),  (MoARD,1997EC): In this manual guideline of Farmers Training Centers ( FTC) and their major role in agricultural development is indicated. It also provides information of structural and organizational arrangement of the centers, the different services and training given, evaluation and monitoring systems used (250kb,29pp)

MoARD's Extension Development performance report of the year 1998/99 (Amharic) (2.06Mb, 39pp)

The Challenges of Change for Agricultural Extension in  Ethiopia: This paper discusses some of the challenges of change for Ethiopian Extension. The purpose is to promote discussion on how these challenges might be addressed. Notwithstanding the considerable efforts made in recent years, the challenge of agricultural and rural development transformation in Ethiopia remains formidable for millions of Ethiopian families trapped in grinding poverty. Rural transformation is considered the key to reducing poverty, stimulating economic growth and improving rural livelihoods.2005/(410kb,60pp)

Commercialization of Ethiopian agriculture: extension service from input supplier to knowledge broker and facilitator (180kb,38pp) This paper looks at evolution of the extension institutions globally and in Ethiopia, and how effective these institutions have been in meeting their mandate in the past. It then reviews the present system (strengths and weaknesses) and the newly developed extension strategy for Ethiopia. It concludes with suggestions for improving the extension services in order to fit into its new role in the context of market oriented transformation of the Ethiopian agriculture. 2006 (179kb,38pp)
